MAGENTAR - re.EVOLUTION - Book One
In Toronto, 2032, humanity is all but extinct. It is a world where a savage tribe, led by a psychopathic Samurai, aims to take over Toronto in a post-apocalyptic setting while fighting off mutated creatures.
Ewan, a fearful and overprotective biology high school teacher, is the sole guardian to his rebellious young and adventurous teenage son, Tim. They have made the Royal Ontario Museum their home, their last hope of survival. People mutated into hideous, feared creatures after a deadly pandemic hit the world seven years ago. Most died from the Magentar Virus, some turned into gruesome creatures, and then there were the others… Ewan Walder is lost as he still grieves for his wife and daughter. He dreams of everyday life the way it was years ago, but instead, he is fighting for daily survival. As father and son deal with their shortcomings and try to dodge their mutant attackers, they get rescued by a small group of survivors. Together they encounter a savage tribal clan that becomes a considerable threat. When Tim goes missing during one of their outings while following a mysterious creature, Ewan eventually finds courage and motivation. He decides to walk over dead bodies to find his son. When Ewan discovers that they are not dealing with a third symptom of the Magentar-Virus as they previously thought - but Human Evolution at its finest, his faith in humanity and hope for a better tomorrow ignites his once dim spirit. |
The Story's History
- MAGENTAR is a three-part science-fiction book series.
- The first book was published in English at the end of September 2015.
- The German version is planned to be published through Weltbild Verlag Switzerland.
- MAGENTAR is a project that has taken over 10 years to complete. This captivating story started out as a science-fiction script, and was rewritten into a book for marketing reasons.
- There were 6 "scripts" and finally a book was adapted from it. The author Guido Baechler and his co-author Joel Mark Harris, a remarkable award-winning Canadian writer, were able to develop a mature and more detailed story.
- There were many working titles, but the title has been adapted over time from "Cause & Effect" (registered with the WGA Writers Guilt Association) to "R(e)Evolution to "R(e)Volution, and was finally released as re.EVOLUTION.
- The final and last title of the book as well as the series is MAGENTAR - re.EVOLUION, Book ONE

I'm going to preface this review with a warning -
I'll absolutely never be able to do this book justice, I'll never remember to include everything that I loved about it here.
That said - this book was insane! In a good way.
When I stepped away from it, I missed it horribly. I actually am still thinking about the characters and dying for Volume 2! It really stays with you - at least it did for me.
When the book opens, I'm intrigued... I think it might be a futuristic deal of a time I cannot relate to.
This isn't the case at all. While it is obviously set in the future, it doesn't seem far-fetched at all. In fact, based on the explanation later given (sorry to be vague, but I don't want to spoil anything for you) it is completely plausible and makes me a little bit terrified that it's going to come true - and not super far into the future!!
Ewan clearly is making the best of a dire situation... it's easy to wonder why he still bothers except - he does have a reason. His son. His son has a hard time remembering or relating to life as we know it now - even though it wasn't that long ago for him ... the world is just that drastically different that it's hard to imagine a different one.
The Creatures - they're not zombies. Don't just think "this is another zombie book" because that's not the case here.
Again - I do not want to post any spoilers but - there are a couple of different species and they can be highly intelligent. Animalistic yes, but also hunanistic - that'll make sense if you read it. They truly are a new race (or races.. read the book).
Naturally - cannibalism is a thing and the humans that have survived have sorted themselves into packs so it's dangerous EVERYwhere.
Make a home for yourself, find a means to survival - but it's so fragile because of the situation.
This book is SO interesting, while being adventurous and thriller-esq.
Truly a fascinating, addicting read and I honestly cannot wait for more.
Cover: Gorgeous and appears to be professionally done. Fitting. LOVE that it's relevant to the content and not generic.
Formatting: Well done, book is easy on the eyes. Appears professional.
Highly highly recommend ... cannot say that enough.
